Interiorscaping with Moss: Living vs. Preserved Moss for Indoor Spaces

Moss walls and indoor moss features have become a signature of biophilic design. The first decision is whether the moss should be living or preserved.

Biophilic design, the practice of bringing nature into the built environment, has turned moss into one of the most popular materials in modern interiors. Moss walls behind reception desks, moss panels in meeting rooms and living moss features in hotel lobbies and conservatories all bring calm, texture and a sense of the outdoors inside.

Before you specify anything, there is one decision that shapes every other choice: living or preserved moss.

Living moss indoors

Living moss is exactly what it sounds like: real moss that continues to photosynthesize and grow. It is spectacular when its needs are met, and those needs are specific.

  • Humidity: high and consistent, often 60% or more
  • Light: bright, indirect light or appropriate grow lighting
  • Water: regular misting, ideally automated, with soft water
  • Best for: conservatories, atriums, greenhouses, terrariums, rainforest exhibits and spaces with climate control designed around plants

Preserved moss indoors

Preserved (or stabilized) moss is real moss that has been treated so it holds its form and color without growing. It needs no light and no watering.

  • Humidity: moderate; very dry air can make it brittle
  • Light: none required; avoid direct sun, which fades color
  • Water: none; never mist preserved moss
  • Best for: offices, lobbies, retail, hospitality and walls where plant care is not practical

Side-by-side

Living moss Preserved moss
Growth Alive and growing Does not grow
Light Required Not required
Watering Regular misting None
Humidity High Moderate
Feel Fresh, dynamic, truly living Consistent, sculptural
Animal areas Natural, untreated options available Keep out of reach of animals

Where living moss shines

If your project has the environment to support it, living moss delivers something preserved moss cannot: it changes, grows and responds to its surroundings. It is the right choice for botanical conservatories, indoor gardens, zoo and aquarium exhibits, and humid atriums. For those projects, see Moss in Indoor Exhibits, Atriums and Conservatories.

Design tips for indoor moss

  • Mix textures. Combine mounded Mood Moss, flat Forest Moss and silvery lichen for depth.
  • Light it well. Even preserved moss looks dramatically better with good accent lighting.
  • Frame it. Wood, stone and metal frames make moss read as art rather than a planter.
  • Plan access. Living installations need room for misting lines and maintenance.

Questions to answer before you specify

  • What is the typical humidity in the space, year-round?
  • How much natural or artificial light reaches the installation?
  • Can misting or irrigation be plumbed in, and who will maintain it?
  • Will people touch it, or animals reach it?
  • Is the goal a stable, sculptural surface or a living, changing garden?

The answers usually point clearly to living or preserved moss. If you are specifying for a larger architectural project, our guide to specifying live moss covers the outdoor side of the same decisions.

Frequently asked questions

Can live moss grow indoors?

Yes, with high humidity, appropriate light and regular misting. It suits conservatories, terrariums and climate-controlled exhibits better than standard offices.

Does a preserved moss wall need water?

No. Preserved moss should never be watered. Keep it out of direct sun and very dry air.

Which is more sustainable?

Living moss keeps growing and can be part of a living system. The best choice depends on whether your space can support it.
